A Slice of the Otherside is a semiannual, open-access collection of slice-of-life stories revolving around the supernatural and the fantastical. These stories lean towards the silly, everyday part of life wherein they explore the “what-ifs” of the fantastic and spooky. There are also essays that could talk about world-building a modern magic system, or how supernatural beings have incorporated themselves into modern life. This anthology is a space for those whose stories do not conform to the traditional horror or fantasy genre, or those who want something lighter. That's why this lighthearted project came about; it is a medium for those who find contentment in what is just right. The overall goal is to bring together writers and readers of this genre, and create stories that focus on the mundane yet interesting part of life. A Slice of the Otherside hopes that, with its stories and essays, to give way for these beginner writers of the genre a place to get published, and for the genre's audience to find more content in.
It's difficult to find journals and magazines that accept entry level urban fantasy and supernatural writers. In most cases, these projects are searching for the typical fantasy or horror fiction. Speculative fiction as well isn't spared from this as most would be finding the sci-fi genre within it. This collection is specifically for those who wish to write a lighter flavor of horror or a modern slice-of-life fantasy.
This collection primarily consists of speculative fiction and creative nonfiction under the themes of urban fantasy, magical realism, supernatural, slice-of-life, and comedy. We are also open to other themes so as long it can be paired with what is being searched for.
A Slice of the Otherside is for those who either want to explore the genre or another source of whimsical supernatural stories. Anyone who'se interested in magical realism or myths taking place in the modern day are welcome to read through the collection.
